Doctrinal StatementAs this book goes to publication, humanity is in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, an event of astonishing proportions and alarming implications. Blame is being cast on nations, ethnic groups, political leaders, wrangling legislators, incompetent bureaucrats, and careless citizens. It is easy to hate people we think are to blame for our troubles. Yet, the love of Christ is both counter-intuitive and radical. One of the best ways to show we are the children of God is by loving people we'd rather hate.
My prayer is that, as you read this book, you will gain a broader understanding of the Bible and a sense of how both the past and the future elucidate the present and give us a sense of purpose.
God extends His mercy to His worst enemies—and to ours. Hating our enemies is natural; it requires no training. Nevertheless, people all over the world are honing their skills and teaching their children to hate with ever increasing vehemence, violence, and bloodshed. Two thousand years ago, Jesus of Nazareth alluded to an event recorded in the Old Testament: “And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian” (Luke 4:27). This book is about Naaman the Syrian. Well, not entirely. It’s also about a young slave girl. It’s about a prophet who hated his audience. It’s about a nation the world has treated with contempt and sought to eliminate. It's about me. It's about you.
